New Character Sizes
The trouble with implementing a game over a long period of time is that you naturally improve your skills through practice. I’ve already had this problem with the backgrounds; some of which have had a few iterations of improvement. I think I reached a point last year where I thought to myself that I had to stick to the style otherwise I’d never be happy. That seems to be working out for backgrounds currently but recently both Drew and I noticed the characters really didn’t fit too well anymore. They were a bit too small to comfortably fit in the newer scenes without heavy scaling, something that we want to avoid if possible.
I don’t really have a problem with how Adventure Game Studio handles character scaling as you only really need to use it when the character walks away from the ‘camera’ and that should happen very little with new background designs. That being said, if we are going to upscale all the characters to fit in the new scenes, they would stick out like like a sore thumb.
With that in mind, a few weeks ago we both agreed that increasing the size of the characters would be beneficial to maintain the look of the game. The difference that 15 pixels or so (it varies due to their relative heights) makes is quite astonishing, although I now have to consider if they are now big enough that the ‘no eyes’ style really fits the characters anymore.
